The struggling Cloquet girls softball team has been fighting to find a way to win a tight game this season. Monday night, the Jacks broke through with a 1-0 victory in the first game of a double header against a very good Superior ball club.

The Cromwell softball team is just looking to improve each game this season. Last Thursday, the young Cards picked up a big win when they downed the Two Harbors Agates 13-8 at home, but then fell in a doubleheader to McGregor.

The Esko and Moose Lake-Willow River boys and girls track teams had a chance to show their wares at the Two Harbors Invitational on Tuesday. The Esko girls took the team title, while Moose Lake-Willow River finished third. Esko took second in the boys, while the Rebels finished in third place.

It took a late inning home run to finally seal the win, but the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears were able to hang on and take a 3-2, 11-inning win over Cloquet in girls softball on Tuesday night.

Cloquet High School junior Sadie Lundquist has been selected to the Minnesota Advanced-17s girls hockey team which will compete in the national hockey tournament June 25 to July 1 in Lake Placid, N.Y.
“We are overjoyed at having Sadie return to Lake Placid,” said Cloquet-Esko-Carlton coach Dick Bartholdi.

Barnum picked up three softball victories over the last week by taking a 5-1 over Moose Lake-Willow River, a 13-1 victory over Two Harbors, and a narrow 3-2 win over Silver Bay.

With a No. 5 state ranking and an undefeated season thus far, the Cloquet baseball team is starting to turn heads in local baseball circles.

The Cloquet track team has hit the ground running in the past week with the Hermantown Quadrangular last Wednesday and Proctor Quadrangular Tuesday.
“In Hermantown, it was a good meet for us and it was great to be outside,” said Cloquet coach Tim Prosen.

After struggling in an extra-inning loss last week the Esko baseball team got some breaks on offense in Monday night’s 10-2 throttling of Crosby-Ironton.

The Esko softball team remains hot. After their thrilling come-from-behind win over Cloquet a week ago, the Eskomos picked up wins over McGregor and Cook County on Monday and Tuesday night, respectively.

The Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College women’s fast pitch team put an exclamation mark on their inaugural season with a pair of wins over Hibbing Community College on Monday at Braun Park in Cloquet. The Thunder struggled to a first game 8-7 come-from-behind win and then pounded the Cardinals 11-3 in the nightcap.

Now that the fields have finally dried out enough for teams to play, the AlBrook Falcons have found themselves in the midst of a spate of games.
On Tuesday night, the Falcons dropped an 8-5 game to Cook-Orr in Saginaw as Ryan Manick pitched Cook-Orr to the win.

It took a big hit from Kyle Duesler, but the Barnum baseball team finally got a break to go their way on Monday night in an 8-5 win over Cotton. Duesler slammed a bases-loaded single to help the Bombers score the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning.

One of the big question marks for the Carlton baseball team this season was whether they would have a strong enough pitching staff.
After back-to-back wins over Barnum and East Central where the pitching staff allowed just one run in each game, the coaching staff may be a bit more comfortable.

The Esko boys and girls track teams traveled to Austin, Minn., last weekend and for the first time this season, got a chance to run outdoors in competition.

The Esko versus Cloquet girls softball game held at Braun Park on Monday started as somewhat of a disaster for Esko and a fairy tale for Cloquet, but by the end of the game, the situation was reversed.

With a state playoff spot in the balance, the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College women’s softball team launched an impressive offensive display at Braun Park on Tuesday night. The Thunder downed Mesabi Range Community College by scores of 14-1 and 12-4 and kept their playoff hopes alive.

Daniel Anderson pitched four strong innings and the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebel baseball team hit the ball well in their 16-2 opening day win last week over Cromwell, followed by wins over McGregor, Proctor and Carlton.

The Bulldogs picked up a win over East Central on Monday and then split a pair of games on Tuesday.

The Cloquet baseball team is trying to prove they belong in the upper tier of teams in the area this season and by winning close games they could be on their way. The Lumberjacks picked up two one-run victories against Ashland and Virginia to open the season this week.

AlBrook got off to a good start in girls softball last Thursday with a sweep of the Cherry Tigers. AlBrook took the first game 3-1 and then slipped by with a 4-3 second game win as well.

The Esko-Carlton golf teams will move up a division this year and play Class AA, joining the likes of Cloquet, Hermantown, Virginia and Marshall among others schools after playing for years at the Class A level.
