The 51st annual Minnesota Inventors Congress, held June 14 in Redwood Falls, Minn., recognized three Carlton County residents.

Five from Carlton County receive Marshall H. and Nellie Alworth Memorial scholarships

The Marshall H. and Nellie Alworth Memorial Fund has awarded $2.1 million in scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year to 472 students in northeastern Minnesota. Those from Carlton County include Brittany Bauer of Carlton, Brandie Lundquist of Wrenshall, Matthew Ellison and Kelsey Lund of Cloquet, and Laura Mills of Esko.

Wrenshall artists use graffiti skills for good

Seeing eighth- and ninth-graders with bandanas and spray cans is probably not what local business people like to see, but on Memorial Day, these kids were invited. A group of enthusiastic artists from Wrenshall were brought by their art teacher, Ann Carlander, on a creative mission, volunteering to do a major art project.

Korman, Fahland named Science Scholars of Distinction

Katrina Korman, a junior at Cloquet High School, and Jeffrey Fahland, a junior at Wrenshall High School, have been awarded the title of “Minnesota Scholar of Distinction in Science” by the Minnesota Department of Education. They are among 14 science students statewide who will receive this award. The Scholars of Distinction in Science recognizes and acknowledges exceptional accomplishment, achievement, and performance in science. It is conferred by the Minnesota Department of Education.
